A Song A Day
Date posted: 2nd February, 2010 at 6:32 pmBack in December 2009, I decided that I would come up with a selection of New Year’s Resolutions for the purpose of testing myself, to see if I could achieve anything I put my mind to. At the time of thinking of suitable resolutions I was also tiring of my current music playlist, not because I didn’t like the music, it was just that I had heard each of the songs so many times it was getting repetitive. I therefore decided that I would try to expand my music library. The idea of A Song A Day was born. Although I had no plans to create a project out of this, another of my resolutions was to practice PHP and Web Development in general. I put the two together and created a little side project, where I would share my daily discoveries with the world (or at least those that follow what I do).
I began setting this up late December, designing the layout on Photoshop. It wasn’t until early January before I actually began coding it up, by this time I was already picking my daily songs. To record this whilst the site was not up and running I used Spotify to create a playlist of the songs. I had originally planned to use Youtube for finding the songs and sharing however the ease of using Spotify and their playlist feature meant I decided to use Spotify for finding and sharing the songs I found.
This side project has helped me learn more about PHP coding, putting what I have learnt into practice and making something that works. It has also expanded my music library, since I started this I have so far discovered not only the 30 or so songs that I have recorded on the website but also more by the same artists. I tried to keep it to one artist/album so that I could get a wider variety of music. I think this is showed by that fact that my taste in music now has chilling music such as Michael Buble and Jamie Cullum but also more lively music such as You Me At Six and Rise Against.
I’m not trying to say these tracks are my favourite songs, nor am I trying to say this is what you should listen to. This is merely me recording and sharing songs that I’ve heard and that I enjoyed listening to.
I want to get some user suggestions on this project, songs that you have heard and would recommend to me. There is a form on the website and I would gladly listen to any recommendations. Another way is to contact me via Facebook or Twitter and suggest there.
The URL for this sideproject is http://songaday.chriswhite-online.co.uk/
